Eva and David have been married for forty years, and they have not always been happy together. After discovering that Eva is ill, the couple travel to San Francisco to see their grandchildren, where Eva makes a special connection with her granddaughter, Jeannie.

Slowly, Eva reveals details about her life to Jeannie, from being raised in Russia during the middle of the revolution to raising a large family in America to facing old age in a retirement home run by her defeated husband’s union. Jeannie’s love for life inspires Eva, who rediscovers her love for David as she draws inevitably closer to death.
